A Message from Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

Educators have always been a first responder of sorts. We are with our students over 180 days each year. We see them at their best and at their worst. This has always been true. That’s why so many of us remember some of our teachers over our entire lifetime. They were there when we needed an adult the most. The challenges of the past several years have left our students needing more support and understanding than ever before. We are seeing a “learning loss” that is frightening. Many of our students are experiencing feelings that impede the entire learning process, leaving them feeling unsure of themselves academically and socially. Being back in the classroom full time means sharing space with students who may or may not have the interpersonal skills to handle the conflict and frustration that comes with this territory.

There is hope on the horizon! With proven restorative discipline practices, we can significantly improve student behavior, reduce exclusionary discipline, and begin to mediate the loss so many students are dealing with. We can become the link between where our students were, where they are now, and where they need to be. This means academically, but it also means emotionally and socially. With appropriately used restorative practices, we can help our students gain greater empathy, manage conflict more productively, improve their behavior, and strengthen their ability to learn. It’s a good day when you can say goodbye to challenging behaviors and say hello to a stronger culture of learning.
