A Message from Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

Teaching students who are grade levels behind in their math skills has unique challenges. Students may have math baggage from previous years and may have math anxiety from potentially years of failure in the subject. Coupled with the stress we feel as secondary math teachers to get through all of our content so our students are prepared for the next math course, you might get a very stressful and challenging class to teach. Not to mention many special education or intervention teachers are not provided sufficient curriculum or materials, but are told to “figure it out” and “do what you think is best.” To top it off, our struggling students are sometimes apathetic, disengaged, and difficult to motivate. We try our hardest to encourage them to participate, but we’re often met with blank stares, silence, and apathy.

While there are many approaches and resources available to teachers of students who struggle with math, Desmos is by far one of the most powerful to increase student engagement. I have specifically designed this seminar based on my years as a secondary math teacher, math coach, and math PD facilitator. I am excited to share with you how to make the best use of FREE Desmos to skyrocket engagement of your students who struggle with math. Desmos Activity Builder is a powerful tool to encourage students to explain their reasoning, practice conceptual understanding, share their thinking with peers, manipulate mathematical concepts, draw connections between different concepts, and gather real time formative feedback. Watch as your students’ confidence, interest and enthusiasm for learning math grows.

Join me for a day filled with practical ways to make best use of Desmos to strengthen your math instruction for students who struggle. Increase engagement and get your students to take a more active role in their math learning. Explore Desmos Activity Builder from the student perspective and how to maximize student learning from the teacher dashboard. Easily build your own lessons and explore a host of pre-made Activity Builder lessons you can immediately incorporate or quickly adapt. Since Desmos is constantly changing we’ll explore the latest new features and updates! Plus, you will receive my Desmos handbook, which is packed with practical resources and instructions.

Whether you are brand new to Desmos, an experienced user, or anywhere in between, if you’re looking to boost engagement of your most apathetic students, this day is for you!

Juniana Tapper

P.S. I have personally witnessed how Desmos can transform math engagement for students who struggle and lead to greater learning. I can’t wait to show you how!
