A Message from Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

As secondary math educators, getting our students authentically motivated and engaged in learning mathematics can be challenging! Are you tired of students asking, “When are we going to use this?” or “Will this be on the test?” Do your students fear making mistakes or being embarrassed in front of their peers if their answer is not correct? Have you tried using handheld graphing calculators only to find students get bogged down not knowing which buttons to push or what syntax to use? What I find so exciting about Desmos is that it has the power to greatly enhance our math instruction and to help us address these and so many other challenges we face.

Having used Desmos extensively with my own middle and high school math students, I confess I am passionate about the power of teaching secondary mathematics with Desmos! I am continually amazed at the potential of this tool in the hands of students and teachers alike. In my classroom Desmos has become the go-to tool. Students immediately find it easy to use and full of features that help them visualize mathematics and sometimes even design their own products or demonstrate realworld phenomena.

I can’t wait to share with you how to make best use of Desmos in your own mathematics instruction. I have designed this seminar to cover all the essential aspects of Desmos while also demonstrating what is possible as teachers and students learn the full breadth of capabilities in Desmos. We’ll explore examples across a wide range of topics from class activities used to introduce new math topics all the way up to modeling and simulation projects. You’ll have hands-on time to identify and explore highly relevant applications for use in your own mathematics classroom.
