Dear Colleague:

The Common Core Standards of mathematics are really all about the practices. While the Standards of Content have some noteworthy changes, the truly radical shift is in the Standards of Practice. These practices will demand math educators to teach students the skills to truly think mathematically.

Just as the Standards of mathematical content are what students are expected to know by the end of a school year, the Standards of mathematical practice are what they are expected to be able to do. As math educators, it is our new responsibility to instill these abilities in our students. It’s been my experience that traditional methods of instruction will not accomplish this for most of our students. We need the understanding of what these practices are calling for, and the resources and techniques to get the job done in the classroom.

During this fast-paced seminar, you will receive both. You will experience firsthand the very lessons that you will eventually implement in your math classroom. Offering you this student perspective will not only make for a very enjoyable seminar, but will allow you to more fully grasp how these lessons and principles of instruction can significantly influence the mathematical thinking of your students.
