A Message from Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

As a teacher of students with special needs, I seek to understand what prevents my students from academic, social and behavioral success. I want to know how I can help them become more confident and independent learners and successful self-managers in the classroom and on the playground. Current research and my experience keep directing my attention to the importance of strengthening executive function, self-regulation and social skills as key ingredients to school success for special needs students. As a practitioner, I have seen how developing my skills with these students has increased their success.

Students with special needs experience the reality of high academic and social expectations every day, and the feeling of defeat can show up in their attitude and behavior. This seminar is designed help create or refine your own program by providing you with strategies that will help your students become more confident and more successful learners. You will learn new ways to teach procedures and routines for supporting the development of executive function skills such as sustained attention and task completion, giving them skills they need to approach academic challenges with success. We will discuss ways to help your special needs students increase their social success through better awareness and relationship building, resulting in fewer disruptions to the learning environment. Beyond the basics, we will also discuss family involvement, the development of empathy, and the benefits of self-efficacy.

Social and emotional learning is being realized as a significant contributor to overall academic and life success for all students, sometimes called the 21st century 'rocket fuel' of school success. I invite you to join us in this unique opportunity to learn how to ensure your special needs students are included and can share the many benefits of this instruction.

Sincerely,
Kathy Perez, EdD

P.S. I know how valuable your time is so my goal is to share dozens of practical strategies you can use with your own students as soon as you return to school!
