A Message from Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

Dyslexia can be defined as a language-based learning disability. We know that students with dyslexia have trouble with morphology, phonemic awareness (sound recognition), and phonological awareness (blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds) which then impacts reading accuracy and fluency. Students may also struggle with reading comprehension, spelling and writing, which relies on morphosyntax development.

According to ASHA, through our Roles and Responsibilities of Speech-Language Pathologists in Schools, we are called to highlighting language and literacy as current research supports the interrelationships across the language processes of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

With our knowledge as speech-language pathologists of phonemic/phonological awareness and word retrieval, we can impact reading fluency and accuracy. With our knowledge in morphosyntax and metalinguistic skills, we can impact reading comprehension.
A few of the topics I will cover during our day together include:
