Practical Strategies and Materials

As school-based SLPs, our work is both highly rewarding and highly challenging. The rewards of successful therapy are great, but the many nonclinical and administrative aspects of the work can sometimes seem to take over. Keeping students motivated and progressing, moving them steadily to proficiency in speech and language skills, knowing when, how and why they are ready to exit services, applying principles of evidence-based practice (EBP), and then administering and documenting all this for educational records and state requirements can be overwhelming.

In this NEW seminar, outstanding SLP and national presenter, TERESA FARNHAM, will show you how to expedite children’s progress in speech and/or language therapy, help students become more responsible for their own progress, and ultimately meet exit criteria, thereby reducing your caseload. You will also learn ways to powerfully extend your therapeutic reach to times when you’re not there! Numerous ideas to help manage the administrative part of your workload will be shared as well.

Learn to look at the big picture and bring into focus the things that truly matter to maximize your effectiveness, efficiency and reach. Join Teresa for a day full of outstanding ideas and solutions.

A Message from Your Seminar Leader

Dear Colleague:

Communication is the heart of our human experience, making speech-language pathology (at least in my view) the ideal profession. I love helping children succeed and overcome speech and language disabilities. It is so gratifying to see a successful young adult who was once a “speech kid” in a public speaking role, to have a parent express their amazement at how much their preschooler has learned to say, to see a child with autism express himself clearly and calmly in a challenging situation, or to watch a teen with a hearing impairment give a class presentation about her disability.

Despite so many rewarding moments like these, our profession is not without its challenges. Often, I have heard school-based SLPs express frustration with time constraints which seem to prevent them from providing the best possible services to children, with decisions over when and how to dismiss a child from therapy, with a student “hitting the wall” in therapy and struggling to continue making progress, with children heading toward becoming caseload “lifers,” and of course with the time consumed by paperwork.

Several years ago, I made a conscious decision to pursue and develop new strategies for maximizing my therapy effectiveness within my available time, particularly for students who never seemed to reach the level of performance necessary for them to “graduate” from therapy. My unwritten motto became “No more lifers!” In the process, I found many doable and powerful strategies I could implement in my daily work that significantly improved my effectiveness, efficiency and reach as an SLP. This will be the focus of our day together.

My goal for this workshop is to lighten your load, while maximizing your treatment effectiveness for many types of speech-language disabilities. Please join me for a day of revisiting and refining our routine SLP practices in powerful ways. I want to share ways to tame the paperwork monster and to extend your reach beyond face-to-face therapy. Let’s put our considerable problem-solving skills to work on resolving key practice issues, with the overarching goal of moving all our students to higher levels of performance to support their overall success.

I look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Teresa Farnham
